Why NOTD?
Welcome to the NOTD community. Our team (Ability & Reily) wanted to create a survival mod for Starcraft 2 because:
i) Players want to play a quality cooperative game - There weren't many memorable cooperative games in Starcraft and Warcraft III. Games like DOTA and Battleships were hybrid cooperative games that focused on the competitive element (team vs. team). Tower defense games were often a quickie without much involvement and customization. The better quality cooperative games came in the form of zombie survival (NOTD 2, NOTD Aftermath, SWAT). However, they had a limited audience and were created late in the lifestage of Warcraft III. Even so, they had the hallmark qualities of high replayability and depth that players were looking for. We know survival games are in demand and can be successful when launched to the right audience at the right time. To reach the mass market, a strong entry needs to be created when the SC2 is launched (summer 2010).
ii) We know what it takes to succeed - We have a combined 1000 hours of modding experience in previous games, and we're also gamers ourselves. We've been through the arduous process of finetuning and balancing mods, and will reapply our learnings quickly into SC2. We are committed because this project is a vital learning experience for future ventures we'll make.
iii) There is a unique opportunity to turn this into a business - Blizzard has announced that high-quality mods will be allowed to go for sale on the Blizzard Mod Marketplace. Blizzard has mentioned that games like DOTA do not qualify as a "high-quality" mod in their definition. Our approach to the survival genre (cooperative) allows us to create an engaging storyline, high content gameplay and replayability that enhances the overall SC2 experience. Selling mods for SC2 can turn out to be a big business. There are 12m Battle.Net users today and that will only expand with SC2's highly anticipated release. Players have grown used to paying for new applications (Steam/IPhone App Store) and will increasingly look for mods that add value to their original game titles.
There are many risks and barriers to break, and we will diligently work to overcome them. Let me know your thoughts |
